The diary descibes the voyage of the bark Lanerk from Boston to California by way of the Cape, gold mining in the Tuolumne River area, and the return voyage as far as the Isthmus. He lists passengers such as members of Boston Mechanics Mining and Trading Co., Norfolk and California Mining Co., Neponset California Mining Co., Roxbury and California Mining Co., officers, and crew. There is a list of ships at Rio de Janeiro in 1849 and a note on Miller's death on route to New York from San Juan by M. Sweetser.
